Research Data Matters video available for broad distribution

The UC Libraries Data Curation Common Knowledge Group has created the first video (https://youtu.be/Lr722k7NyGU) of a proposed video series aimed at promoting awareness of the fundamental concepts and practices for managing research data. The Data Curation CKG identified a shared need for reusable educational material on research data curation among UC campuses. This introductory video incorporates the voices and testimonials of UC researchers to communicate the importance of good data management practices.

We encourage campus libraries to promote the video through websites, social media, and other appropriate communication channels. Options for sharing, including HTML code for embedding the video in web pages, are available by selecting “Share” under the YouTube video.  When embedding, select "Show More" for advanced options (such as removing suggested videos when the video finishes).

Viewers are encouraged to complete a brief feedback survey, linked to at the end of the video, and available here: http://guides.lib.ucr.edu/uclibrariesdataservices/feedback

Viewership and feedback will be used to assess this pilot and inform future development of the series. Questions or feedback can also be submitted directly to the project leads, Kat Koziar (katherine.koziar@ucr.edu) and Emily Lin (elin@ucmerced.edu).

Thank you.

Joint COAR - UNESCO statement on Open Access

You might be interested in this statement just released jointly by COAR and UNESCO.  It is of particular interest in light of the recent Max Plank OA 2020 proposal, as well as the pressure that some European countries are feeling during the Dutch EU Presidency to consider wholesale moves to APC-based gold Open Access.

DOAJ removes approximately 3300 of titles

"Today [May 10, 2016] DOAJ will remove approximately 3300 journals for failure to submit a valid reapplication before the communicated deadline; a deadline which was extended twice to allow more time for reapplications. This batch removal is another step in DOAJ’s two year long project to increase the value and accuracy of the information provided in it."

HathiTrust Research Center now helps researchers analyze 14 million books

HathiTrust announces a significant expansion of the capabilities of the HathiTrust Research Center.  Until now, researchers using HTRC’s services could work only with the portion of the HathiTrust collection that is in the public domain or  CC-licensed.   Now, thanks to a great deal of support from both Indiana University and the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, HTRC has begun support for secure text and data mining services on all 14 million volumes in HathiTrust.  This is being piloted in 2016 with projects in the Advanced Collaborative Support program (see https://www.hathitrust.org/htrc_sp16_acs-rfp). Availability through services such as the Analytics Portal (https://analytics.hathitrust.org/) is planned by early 2017.  We are excited to at last be able to offer this expanded access, and hope that you will be in touch with any questions.
